PARDS Therapeutic Programs
|
We practice equine assisted therapy to help people feel healthy and strong. We offer a wide range of programs that seek to impact lives in many positive ways. It’s not just about riding horses (though that is an important part of what we do), we also provide several programs that bring our clients in close contact with horses but don’t include sitting in a saddle. At PARDS we don’t fit our clients into a program, instead we adapt the program to meet the specific needs and goals of the client. It might be a combination of programs, a modification of an existing program or a brand-new program altogether. All of our equestrians are special, unique individuals and we work carefully to find the best way to make a positive difference.
PARDS is a community leader in providing specific therapies for people living with a disability and a champion in the disability community. We believe in the right of individuals of all abilities to access quality supports and services to assist them to achieve independence, self-confidence, community presence and involvement. We support this belief through our mission of providing high quality, innovative animal assisted therapeutic programs to Peace Country residents of all ages. Our core equine assisted therapeutic programs include mounted riding, cart driving and grooming/ground driving.

We believe in the power of engagement with horses and other animals. We also believe there are many different ways to engage with them to support specific outcomes and address individual needs. As a result, we developed a number of inclusive animal assisted therapeutic programs to support individuals of all abilities to achieve success, feel a sense of connectedness and gain skills and knowledge through experiential learning opportunities.
PARDS is proud to offer a selection of inclusive programs to support individuals of all abilities to realize the benefits of working and engaging with horses and other animals. These programs are open to those with a clinical diagnosis as well as those without.

Little Pony Motricity is designed for ages 3 to 7 to a maximum 48” tall and 65 lbs. The program is set up with fun activities that incorporate fundamental skills in early ages of development while working with assisted learning through our equine partners. Little Pony Motricity is both a ground work and riding program. Riders work in pairs with a pony to challenge obstacle courses designed to stimulate problem solving and sequencing skills and create self-learning and independence through play. Access to this program is open to children of all abilities. Benefits include increased self-confidence, enhanced fine & gross motor skills, improved concentration & attention span.

Youth Leadership is a ground work experiential learning program focusing on cooperation, relationship-building, self-esteem and more. It’s developing positive life skills without even realizing you’re learning. The skills learned within the arena setting are easily transferred to everyday relationships and situations.
- The participant works directly with a horse partner and a volunteer mentor under the guidance of the program facilitator and a horse co-facilitator sometimes individually and sometimes as part of a group.
- The participant engages in a variety of activities with their horse partner (e.g. interacting with the horse to achieve a result such as moving in a specific direction without the aid of tools or props, observing herd behaviour and dynamics, long reining as part of a group).
It’s all about choices. That’s our ultimate goal, to increase a youth’s awareness of how their choices impact others. Participants make the choices and they evaluate those choices in the end. As co-facilitators the horses guide and support.

This program provides children and youth connection with a fun, compassionate and non-judgmental animal while they develop and strengthen their fundamental literacy skills. They are given the opportunity to build their reading skills by reading to their chosen animal partner whether it be pony, horse, duck, goat or bunny. They are provided with the guidance of caring and compassionate volunteer mentors to help build their confidence in reading. They will also play fun literacy developing games with their trusty animal partners. These games focus on letters, sounds, sight words, writing, combination sounds and much more! The participants will also write a story about their animal partner throughout their session which they will take home at the end of their program.

THERAPEUTIC & INCLUSIVE PROGRAM PRICING

PARDS is proud to support members of our community of all ages experiencing challenges physically, cognitively, behaviourally, and socially through animal assisted therapeutic programs. Further to providing these programs, we also secure program partners, community donors and raise funds through events and other activities so the registration fees for our therapeutic clients remain low. Costs, including instructor wages, equipment, horse care, feed, building costs, among others associated with running the programs have steadily increased. After 10 years of holding the fees at their current rate, we have made the decision to add a modest increase to therapeutic and inclusive program fees. The increase will take effect for all programs beginning in the fall 2020 session.

P’tit Trot is an exciting program developed by Cheval Quebec and offered for children ages 5 years old and up, who love horses and want to learn more about the equestrian world. The P’tit Trot program is devoted solely to the initiation of equitation and general horsemanship, allowing children to discover the pleasures of English & Western disciplines as well as an introduction to trail riding and developing proper knowledge on how to care for the horse.
The P’tit Trot book is lavishly illustrated throughout and introduces familiar characters for the children to follow and relate to. Each book is divided into 4 chapters – Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum with each chapter building on the previous skill set. In addition to the illustrated manual that supports practical teaching, a game book allows the child to reinforce the knowledge gained while having fun. At each level attained (bronze, silver, gold, platinum) the young rider receives a certificate of achievement.
This program offers a fun way to discover the wonderful world of horses. It contributes to acquiring various motor and technical skills and encourages children to be physically active, and gaining confidence & self-esteem as they progress through the program. Additionally, this program falls into the “Fundamentals” stage of the Long Term Equestrian Development model.
